Enough Rome Sightseeing, Let's Eat!

Enough Rome sightseeing - show me the chocolate!

10 ways to enjoy a helping of Italy's most celebrated chocolate product.

Italian books have been written about it. Songs have been dedicated to it, and it has even made special appearances in important films. What could this phenomenon be that has people all over the world hooked? NUTELLA, that’s what.

City life is hectic and hurried. Most Romans prefer a breakfast comprised of an espresso or cappuccino along with something sweet to start their day off on the right foot.  For tourists, on the other hand, Rome sightseeing can take a lot out of a person. What better way to get a quick pick-me-up than with a chocolaty dose of heaven?

Whatever the reason, whatever the time of day, here are ten ways to enjoy the divine hazelnut chocolate ambrosia now known around the globe as Nutella.

1. On bread

Keep it simple. Crack open the perfect little (or big) jar, and use a butter knife to spread it over a nice slice of soft Italian or French bread.

2. Gelato

A good Italian gelateria will offer a flavor known as “variegato con nutella”, which is usually a creamy fior di latte base with globs of nutella marbled through it.

3. As hot fudge sauce on top of ice cream

If your Rome sightseeing has come to a conclusion and said good Italian gelateria is not within your reach, do not fear. Nutella is near. Make yourself a bowl of vanilla ice cream, and instead of hot fudge, warm a few tablespoons of nutella and pour it over the top. Chopped nuts and whipped cream can only compliment this combination.

4. Crepes

These delicate little pancakes are often filled with nutella alone, banana and nutella, or nutella and cream. All are given a two thumbs up.

5. Crostate

Crostate are similar to a lattice torte, with a pastry crust on the bottom, nutella filling, and criss-crossed flaky pastry on top. Although these are sold even commercially in supermarkets, etc, they are especially good when you can find the home made version. As with most sweets, nonna’s version is always the best!

6. Pizza

Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. Pizza dough with nutella and powdered sugar on top is no joke.

7. Fried dough with nutella

This  is a common Italian fair or carnival food which children and adults alike adore. Why wouldn’t they?

8. Cornetto

The cornetto is similar to the French croissant, and comes with many varieties and filling options. No filling, jam filling, honey filling, whole grain, cream filled, and of course, nutella filled.

9. Right off the spoon

In this day and age, why bother with opening acts. Sometimes you just need to go straight for the main event.

10. Right off of body part of choice

If you like the idea of nutella without side shows but still want to “spice it up”, here’s what you’ll need:

1 jar nutella

1 dark room (but not too dark or you could have a sticky mess when you’re done)

1 scantily dressed, willing co-conspirator

Directions: Use your imagination!

If you are in Italy for more than a day, it's quite obvious how serioud the Italians feel about their nutella... my favorite is on pizza, although option number 10 sounds like fun!
