Overview
Today, as 1,850 years ago, Testaccio is a Roman district renowned for food and wine. In antiquity, ships unloaded vast quantities of foodstuffs, wine and oil here from all four corners of the Empire, to keep a million Roman bellies full. Evidence of shipments can be seen from almost anywhere in the working class Testaccio district, dominated by Monte Testaccio (Monte dei Cocci), an unnatural mound of countless fragmented amphorae which still carry the secrets of how Romans used to eat and drink in the early Imperial age. Today's covered Testaccio food market has replaced a 19th Century slaughterhouse. We visit traditional stalls which sell classic Roman fare, the same now as hundreds of years ago; rich varieties of pasta, pastries, meats, cheese and wine. This tour is a guided walk of modern Testaccio which includes plenty of sample tastings and good advice as regards where to go in the evening for a traditional Roman meal, perhaps as it used to be in 150 AD. Rione XX is transforming into Rome's hippest neighborhood and foodie haven, so join us as we stroll the streets of Testaccio in search of traditional bites and innovative food creations which combine the old with the new. We call in at a small pasta shop which supplies traditional Roman restaurants in this up and coming suburb, where food really does matter!
