Overview
The Borghese Gallery is one of Europe finest art collections, housed in an elegant suburban villa built for the Cardinal Scipione Borghese at the beginning of the 16th century. Many of its ceilings have some of the most remarkable frescoes of the late 1700’s perfectly preserved. This gallery is sure to impress you, with paintings of the masters Raphael with his touching Deposition from the cross, Titian’s mastepiece in pure venetian style of the Sacred and Profane Love , and Caravaggio, a controversial but ingenius and innovative 17th century painter with his unique use of “chiaroscuro” (darkness and light) and profound subjects such as David With The Head of Goliath. Scipione was an important patron of the arts and sought to acquire ancient sculptures which you will admire inside the Villa, but above all else he was the first patron in Rome of the young Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the genius of the Baroque who mastered the ability to fight gravity and win. You will experience the power, courage and emotion of Bernini’s David, the fear emanating from the young Prosperina in the Rape of Prosperina, and the extreme desperation of the Apollo an Daphne, when Daphne is caught in the extraordinary moment just as her flesh transforms into a tree while escaping from Apollo’s grasp. The visit will culminate with a tribute to the grace ond smoothness of the marble used in the sculpture of Paolina Borghese by Antonio Canova, a sophisticated work of Napoleon’s sister made for her husband, a member of the Borghese family.
