Overview
Morning arrival at Venice port.
Detailed background tour of St. Mark's Basilica, the interior of which resembles the shape of a Greek Cross, it's mosaics (8,000 m2 adorned with gold, bronze and thousands of precious stones), and the renowned Byzantine framed altarpiece 'Pala D'Oro'.
Tour of the Doge's Palace, an early 14th Century Gothic palace which was the seat of power of the Republic of Venice. Rebuilt in 1577 after fire, we visit the old prison cells and you can see Lord Byron's Bridge of Sighs.
One hour private boat trip down the Grand Canal with full orientation of the Venetian Lagoon and explanation of how the city is divided into the sestiere of Cannaregio, San Polo, Dorsoduro (inc. the Giudecca and Isola Sacca Fisola), Santa Croce, San Marco (inc. San Giorgio Maggiore) and Castello (inc. San Pietro di Castello and Sant'Elena.
Lunch break and drinks, time to relax before the second leg of your Venice shore excursion.
Tour of the 14th Century Frari Church (Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari). Titian is interred there and his Assumption sits above the high altar. Walk around modernist, futurist and surrealist works in the Peggy Guggenheim Museum.
One hour browsing traditional Venetian shops, stalls and murano artisans which sell high quality goods at great prices, well away from the busy tourist hotspots.
Optional 45-60 minute gondola ride with or without a singing gondolier! Please let us know if you would like to experience this icon of Venetian tradition at first hand. In the 17th Century, some 10,000 gondolas were in use in Venice. Today, that number has dwindled to less than 500.
Return to Venice port 90 minutes before cruise ship departure.
