Overview

"Best of the Colosseum: Arena Floor & Gladiator Gate" is the catch-all Colosseum tour in 90 minutes for busy tourists!

Understand how ancient Roman traditions have come to influence the modern world in so many ways. Walk in the footsteps of emperors, slaves, gladiators and perhaps even the Gods which ruled Rome and the Roman Empire in antiquity.

We meet on the steps beside Trajan's mighty column, recalling his victory in the Dacian Wars. It's stood in the same spot since AD 113 and is the perfect place to set out towards the Colosseum. Indeed, Trajan's Column is a tour in itself, so many stories wrap around it's intricate spiral bas-relief. But first, we walk straight into the soul of ancient Rome and wander through the temples, shrines and basilicas which make the Roman Forum such an amazing place. Every building, still standing or ruined in part connects over 2,500 years of history in a somewhat small area. It's a major highlight of Rome and time therein with a local expert archaeologist guide is absolutely required, and we deliver!

Looking southward from the Roman Forum you will be able to see the Colosseum, and it's our next destination. Your guide will walk you around the entire circumference of the Flavian amphitheatre, explaining every aspect of the structure in great detail. Soon thereafter you will enter the arena through Gladiator Gate. This is an arched side-entrance used by gladiators in antiquity. Today, it serves as an impressive way to enter the Colosseum away from the main entrance, which is always crowded with large groups of tourists. On the other side of Gladiator Gate is the arena floor, where gladiators killed and survived, or died for the pleasure of others. This brutal place in history is now the perfect spot to glance all around at the sheer scale and beauty of the Colosseum. It must have been terrifying in AD 80, but this is something we can reflect on rather than worry about!

Your guide will deliver a brief history of the arena floor and Colosseum interior before leaving you inside to wander at your leisure.

There is no waiting and no worry on this 90 minutes fast-track tour of restricted access areas inside the Colosseum. It includes priority Colosseum ticket entry and tour inside plus easy access into the Roman Forum with an expert local archaeologist guide.

Meeting point info will be sent in booking confirmation e-mail. For security reasons, backpacks, rucksacks, large handbags, luggage etc. are banned inside the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Colosseum arena floor will be closed December 23rd through January 8th.
