The steps up to the top of Michelangelo’s dome begin on the marble paving stones of St. Peter’s Square. There are 551 steps in total, so we take the elevator partway, which cuts the count to an easier 380. We take our time and enjoy plenty of staircase breaks! After visiting the dome and taking in the remarkable views, rest for a while before entering St. Peter’s Basilica, where Bernini’s sculptures and Michelangelo’s art rise above Holy Papal tombs and the perceived necropolis of St. Peter himself.
After a morning of walking and climbing, be sure to bring your appetite for a food tour like no other! Ten tasting makes for a big meal. You won’t find a more fun or satisfying food experience when in Rome!
